One of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures today is liposuction. The procedure has been around for many years, consistently providing patients with satisfying results. The procedure is designed to remove unwanted deposits of excess fat in areas such as the thighs, lower back, stomach, chin, and arms. The fat removing technique, also referred to as body contouring, can improve the appearance by eliminating a distorted shape and asymmetrical figures.
The best candidate for the procedure will be in generally good health, dealing with localized fatty deposits; these will potentially cause disproportionate body contours that remain even after diet and exercise.
Several types of liposuction procedures are available today:
- Tumescent Liposuction: The most common surgery. This involves injecting a large amount of medicated solution into the targeted before the fat is removed through the cannula. The fluid includes a local anesthetic, a drug to contract vessels, and a salt solution. Tumescent liposuction generally takes the longest of all lipo procedures.
- Super Wet Technique: Similar to Tumescent Liposuction, only not as much fluid is used during the surgery. The volume will be identical to the amount being removed. The Super Wet technique requires general anesthesia.
- Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction: A new Liposuction technique, this involves ultrasonic vibrations to liquefy fat cells. After the fat cells have been liquefied, they can be vacuumed out with the cannula. The ultrasound-assisted technique works well for fibrous areas, such as the upper back or male breast tissue.
The Liposuction Procedure:
This procedure is performed at the state-of-the-art Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, normally under general anesthesia; a treatment will take between one and three hours. Normally, liposuction is done as an outpatient procedure, although some extensive procedures may require an overnight stay.
The procedure begins with small incisions placed along the targeted area, in which a narrow tube or cannula will be inserted. The cannula will be pushed and pulled through the fatty tissue to break up cells; they are then suctioned out. This can be performed through a vacuum pump or a large syringe. The incisions may be sutured after the procedure.
Recovery from Liposuction:
Patients should expect their recovery from liposuction to take one to two weeks. Once the procedure is complete, a compression garment will be placed over the treated area. This will need to be worn for several days after surgery, to control swelling and promote healing. Small, temporary drains will be used to remove excess blood and fluid. Temporary bruising, swelling, soreness, burning sensations, and numbness may occur. These should resolve on their own, over the first three to four weeks.
This may be a painful, slow process but Dr. Holcomb and Dr. Kreithen understand this; they will make sure patients are prescribed appropriate pain medications to keep them comfortable at home. Patients are generally feeling well enough to return to work in about two weeks. Strenuous activity should be postponed for four to six weeks. It is not uncommon for patients to feel anxious or depressed after the surgical procedure, but as the healing process improves, this will pass.
Liposuction is considered a safe and efficient procedure, although there is always the risk of some complications. This may include scarring, bleeding, infection, irregular or asymmetric appearance. Permanent numbness and pigmentation may occur as well. These are best avoided by choosing a Board Certified cosmetic surgeon like the physicians at Holcomb Kreithen Plastic Surgery.
Liposuction is a staple of cosmetic surgery, but not all physicians have the experience and the skill of Dr. Holcomb and Dr. Kreithen. Having performed thousands of Liposuction treatments, there is no safer or more efficient procedure available today.
