Cheek Implants Sarasota
As we age, fatty tissue in the midface tends to migrate downward toward the nose and mouth. This repositioning of fatty tissues creates the appearance of volume loss between the highpoint of the cheek and the resulting heavier nasolabial (smile) fold. True volume loss may also accompany age-related fat redistribution resulting in cheeks that look sunken or flat, even giving the appearance of an unhealthy look in some. Cheek augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure designed to enhance the look and proportion of the cheeks through the use of an implant. Cheek implants can add prominence to the cheekbones and balance the facial features.
Cheek Augmentation can be a very effective stand-alone procedure if performed on its own. Cheek augmentation may also be combined with other procedures, though, such as the Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery), Laser Assisted Facelift, Laser Skin Resurfacing to provide enhanced overall facial rejuvenation results.
Alternatives to cheek augmentation include autologous fat grafting (Adivive fat harvest and transfer) and soft tissue filler injections (e.g. Radiesse; e.g. Voluma XC).
The Cheek Implant Procedure:
Performed as an out-patient procedure in our private, accredited, office based ambulatory surgical facility, cheek augmentation is generally performed with light IV sedation and takes up to 1 hour. The surgeon will first make a small incision inside the upper lip and the implants are then carefully inserted into the cheek area.
Cheek Implant Recovery:
During the initial one week recovery from Cheek Augmentation there may be mild discomfort and mild to moderate swelling. Although bruising may occur it tends to be light. Patients generally feel well enough to return to work or school in one week, however strenuous activity should be postponed for two to four weeks.

Patients with flat or “sunken” cheeks may benefit from placement of cheek implants. Modern implants are available to address primarily flat cheeks, “sunken” cheeks or both. Cheek implants are typically placed through a small incision under the upper lip.
Facial aging can affect volume at multiple levels. At the skin level, decreased collagen thickness and loss of elasticity lead to formation of wrinkles and sagging. Changes also occur beneath the skin. Aging of the midface generally involves redistribution of fat volume – with increasing hollowness of the mid-cheek and increasing fullness of the nasolabial fold as fat migrates downward in the face.
Optimum rejuvenation of the aging cheek may require re-draping of sagging tissues (facelift and/or mid-face lift), skin resurfacing (to smooth wrinkles and tighten skin) and filler injections or cheek implants to increase volume. Recently, selective removal of volume (fat that has migrated downward in the face) has become possible with the revolutionary AccuLift™ facial contouring procedure.
In 2009, Dr. Holcomb authored a scientific paper describing the use of cheek implants to enhance facial rejuvenation results with facelift surgery: Holcomb JD. Facelift Adjunctive Techniques: Skin Resurfacing and Volumetric Contouring. Facial Plast Surg Clin N Am. In Press.
