Otoplasty / Earlobe Repair Sarasota

The Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve the shape of the ear.  Problems with development of the ear may include over development of the Conchal Bowl Cartilage (a ‘cup ear’), a failed development of the anti-helical fold (a ‘lop ear’), or ears that unusually protrude from the head.  Patients experiencing these or other issues of the ear may find great benefit from the Otoplasty procedure.

Unusually shaped ears can be the catalyst for teasing and bullying.  The ideal age for an Otoplasty is between five and six years old.  This is when the ear has become fully developed; just before the beginning of school.  Adults in generally good health can also make excellent candidates for the Otoplasty procedure.

The Otoplasty Procedure:

While Otoplasty is typically performed with general anesthesia for children, IV sedation is generally sufficient for adults.  For adults the outpatient procedure may be performed in our accredited, private, office-based ambulatory surgery center but at Cape Surgery Center (part of Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System) for children requiring general anesthesia.

Recovery from an Otoplasty:

Initial recovery from Otoplasty will take between one and two weeks.  Following surgery patients may experience mild bruising and redness as well as swelling and numbness of the ear(s).  These will gradually resolve over the first few weeks after surgery.  A protective head band is recommended during sleep for the first 3 weeks and continuously during this time for young children.  Any situation (e.g. basketball, wrestling) where they may be potential for a blow to the ear should be avoided for 6 weeks following surgery.

Dr. Holcomb is a respected Otoplasty surgeon with over 15 years of experience. To get more information on the Otoplasty procedure, or to schedule a consultation appointment, click here or call our office at 941.365.8679.

Patients with large or prominent ears may benefit from ear reshaping surgery (otoplasty).

Common problems include over-development of the conchal bowl cartilage (so-called “cup ear”) and/or failure of anti-helical fold development (so-called “lop ear”). These conditions frequently coexist.

The ideal age for otoplasty is age 5 – 6 when the ear is fully developed and just before the child enters school. This minimizes the potential for teasing.

Otoplasty can be performed any time after the ear is fully developed and is often requested by adults that did not have the opportunity to have the condition treated earlier in life.
