Rhinoplasty Sarasota

Whether for cosmetic refinement or to repair a nasal deformity related to an injury or prior cosmetic surgery Dr. J.David Holcomb, M.D. is an expert in rhinoplasty as well as in surgical management of the nasal airway. Our standard of care for rhinoplasty includes Vectra 3D Facial Imaging during your consultation so that we can understand your treatment goals and demonstrate the possibilities for your new nose in a state-of-art visually interactive format.

The Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve aesthetic and functional concerns of the nose.  The problems experienced may be present from birth, or may be due a nasal injury.

Asethetic issues can include dorsal fullness (hump on bridge of nose), asymmetry (eg crooked nasal bridge and/or tip), excessive width or the nasal bones, excessively narrow middle nasal vault, wide or bulbous nasal tip, drooping nasal tip and overly wide or narrow nostrils to name a few. Functional problems experienced may include chronic congestion or stuffiness, as well as the inability to breathe through one or both sides of the nose.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty often involves reducing the size of the nose, narrowing the nose and altering the position of the nasal tip (relative to the upper lip).

Functional rhinoplasty may involve a variety of maneuvers designed to improve the airway while preserving or improving shape.

Revision rhinoplasty is often very challenging because it involves three-dimensional contouring in the face of scar tissue present from a prior surgery or multiple surgeries. Revision rhinoplasty may require removing tissue where too much remains, adding tissue grafts or implants where too little volume exists, correcting asymmetry, altering tip position, narrowing the base, etc.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure:

Dr. Holcomb generally utilizes the Open Rhinoplasty approach.  An Open Rhinoplasty allows for greater visualization and attention to detail, therefore it is performed for the majority of patients.

A Rhinoplasty will take between one to three hours, most often under general anesthesia but occasionally under IV sedation. The procedure is performed as an out-patient surgery; patients are able to rest in the comfort of their own home that same afternoon.

Rhinoplasty Recovery:

Patients should expect the recovery from a Rhinoplasty to take one to two weeks.  Bruising is expected, and will resolve over the first two weeks.  Swelling is also common, the majority of which will diminish over the first several weeks, although some residual swelling may take up to 12 months to completely resolve.  A nasal splint is worn by patients for the first week.  Pateints are able to return to work or school in 10-14 days after their Rhinoplasty. Strenuous activities should be postponed for four to six weeks.

Dr Holcomb uses the Canfield Vectra 3D imaging system to help patients visualize their options and to establish mutual goals for their rhinoplasty surgery.  Dr. Holcomb is an experienced cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty surgeon with nearly 20 years of experience.  Contact our office at 941.365.8679 to schedule your evaluation and Vectra 3D imaging session.

Rhinoplasty is surgery to improve the contour and appearance of the nose.

Form and function of the nose are tightly linked such that attempted improvements in form can affect function (and vice versa) in a positive or negative way.

Patients typically wear a splint on the outside of the nose for one week after surgery. The initial healing period is one week, typical of other facial plastic surgery procedures.

While patients can get back to work or school after the first week, care must be taken to avoid any accidental trauma to the nose during the initial 6 weeks after surgery (to allow time for solid healing of delicate bony structures). The area above the nasal tip takes the longest to heal with a gradual decrease in swelling occurring over 3 to 6 months after surgery.
